Our attorneys used to defend doctors and hospitals before starting this firm at the beginning of 2001. We decided at that time to switch sides and represent those who have been injured by the carelessness and negligence of health care providers. Needless to say, this prior experience has been very helpful in anticipating and successfully overcoming the tactics used to defend these cases. Since then, we have handled many medical malpractice claims against doctors and other healthcare professionals. Our cases against doctors have included everything from the improper placement of a catheter (tube) into the artery of our client’s neck, when same should have gone into the adjacent vein, thus causing a stroke during surgery, to operating on the wrong level of the spine with resulting neurological injuries. Settlements are typically confidential so dollar figures cannot be disclosed but a number of our cases have resulted in recoveries of over a million dollars.
One of the main causes of medical negligence is the failure to follow up with patients after they have been seen for infections or have had surgery, etc. We had a case against the federal government for treatment of a serviceman’s wife. Following a procedure, she developed an infection which became septic ( blood infections). Instead of transferring her to a specialist at a trauma hospital, the military continued to treat her for a couple of weeks, resulting in a life flight to a trauma hospital to attempt to save her life. Her life was saved after voluminous surgeries and months in the hospital, with resulting catastrophic injuries.
We have also handled cases involving doctor’s offices ignoring their patient’s calls back to the office about surgical complications following surgery, which then result in those problems spiraling out of control due to a lack of simple treatment, such as cleaning and debriding wound or antibiotics. We have had a physical therapist who failed to follow a doctor’s lengthy PT instructions after a second full shoulder revision, resulting in the shredding of that shoulder, described as looking like a mophead thereafter. Medical malpractice cases vary widely but still have the same cause, which is the failure to follow standards which all medical practitioners agree are applicable to the treatment of that injury or problem.
